Standards of Learning (SOL)
The Standards of Learning for Virginia Public Schools describe the commonwealth's expectations for student learning and achievement in grades K-12. Standards are provided for English, mathematics, science, histor/social science, technology, the fine arts, foreigh language, health and physical education, and driver education. These standards focuse on what what schools should teach and students should learn.
Curriculum frameworks are provided that detail the specific knowledge and skills students must possess to meet the standards for these subjects. For more information on Standards of Learning currently in effect, please visit the Virginia Department of Education website.
Greensville County Public Schools participates in three SOL testing windows. End of Course tests and middle school science and social science are administered at the end of both first and second semester. All grade levels test at the end of second semester.
Access for ELLs®
The No Child Left Behind legislation requires that all Enlgish language learners must be assessed annually for English proficiency and academic progress. Access for ELLs® is a standards-based, criterion referenced English language proficiency test designed to measure English language learners' social and academic proficiency in English. It assesses social and instructional English as well as the the language associated with language arts, mathematics, science and social science. This test is administered each spring to all English language learners.
Benchmark assessments are given quarterly in grades 1-11 in the core subjects. These assessments provide insight for teachers to determine student and classroom needs. Recommendations for remediation and tutorial are made, using data received.
